The Durango High School volleyball team ended its regular season with a split, beating Windsor 3-0 and falling to Doherty 3-1 at the Cheyenne Mountain Tournament on Saturday in Colorado Springs.
The Demons were impressive in a sweep of the No. 10 team in Class 4A, according to CHSAAnow.com. Berkeley Davis and Laura Lieb led the way with 10 kills apiece, and Bella Bernazzani added eight more as DHS won 25-15, 27-25, 25-19. Logan Clark had 26 assists for the Demons (11-11).
“(It was big) especially since they were in the top 10, and we unfortunately lost to them last year, so coming out and winning this year was a big statement,” DHS senior Mikayla Montoya said.
Durango took a game from Doherty, ranked No. 5 in Class 5A, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Doherty’s size and skill. Bernazzani led the way with eight kills, while Davis and Lieb had seven each. Clark chipped in 20 assists.
“Doherty’s a big school and big team, and we just went out and said, ‘Hey, no ball is going to be dropped without a jersey underneath it,’ and we played all out,” Montoya said.
DHS will head into regionals next weekend, with pairings set to be released Monday, and Montoya said the energy the Demons were able to create this weekend should be a plus going forward.
“I think our energy was definitely up this weekend,” she said. “Our coaches really emphasized just starting strong and being there from the beginning.”
