Demons spurned by golden-goal

DHS girls soccer drops opener at Air Academy tournament

Maddie Robertson’s dangerous leg wasn’t enough for the Demons to buck the Rams.

Robertson scored a goal and had one assist for Durango High School, but the girls soccer team fell 3-2 in overtime to Rampart in the opening round of the Air Academy tournament. Both teams scored two goals in the first half, but it was a golden-goal in overtime that sent the Rams over the top.

“You can tell it is early in the season,” DHS head coach Dalon Parker said. “We’re just not quite as disciplined as we need to be as of yet. Rampart got some breaks and played very direct soccer. They played long balls, and we struggled keeping up and getting in the right positions.”

DHS played the first game of the Air Academy tournament and will play early again Saturday after the loss.

Robertson, a junior, and senior Lauren Milliet got DHS on the board when a Robertson free kick found Milliet in front of goal. Milliet chipped the ball over Rampart’s goalkeeper for the goal.

“A very finesse goal,” Parker said.

Robertson then scored her second goal of the season directly from a corner kick.

“It was another good one for her. She’s a dangerous weapon for us,” Parker said of Robertson.
