Demons’ state volleyball streak stops at 3

The Demons won’t be making a return trip to Denver.

The Durango High School volleyball team’s streak of three consecutive state tournament berths ended Sunday in Denver after the team lost to Greeley Central 3-2 and Thomas Jefferson 3-0 (25-13, 25-15, 25-15).

Game scores for the Demons’ match against Greeley Central weren’t immediately available.

Thomas Jefferson’s leading attackers had a field day against the Demons’ typically strong block.

Jessica Jackson, who ranks second in the state in kills, finished with 20 kills and Celeste James 19. Both players hit over .500 in the match, while the Spartans hit .405 as a team.

DHS (12-13) finished the season below .500 in head coach Colleen Keresey’s first year. Keresey is a DHS alumna.

Thomas Jefferson, playing on its home court, beat Greeley Central 3-0 to advance to state.
