The Durango High School ice hockey team wrapped up its regular season with a pair of wins over the weekend against Pueblo County. DHS beat the Hornets 8-0 on Friday and then 2-1 on Saturday to improve to 8-7-2 overall.
On Friday, DHS led 1-0 after the first period, then exploded for six goals in the second to pull away from Pueblo County.
Pol Cavaller recorded a hat trick and then some for Durango, scoring four goals in the game. Brady Holbrook scored two goals while Jake Martin and Bryson Quimby both netted one.
Nick Best, meanwhile, had three assists in the game to get a playmaker. Holbrook and Mitch Rhodus both assisted two goals while Mason Rhodus assisted one.
Goalie Evan Brock made 18 saves to get the shutout.
Saturday’s game was much closer, but DHS still prevailed. The Demons led 2-1 after the first period and the score stayed there.
Holbrook and Zealand Eaton scored Durango’s two goals, getting assists from Kai Kusuno and Dylan LaBorde.
Goalie Luka Remec made 14 saves to get the win.
DHS will now have to wait see where they end up in the 4A state playoff bracket, which will be released Monday.
The top-10 teams will make the 4A tournament. In this week’s CHSAA rankings, the Demons are No. 8 in 4A, while all six teams from the 4A Mountain league are in the top-10. Glenwood Springs (14-3, 7-1) is ranked No. 1, Steamboat Springs (12-4-1, 7-1) is No. 3, Crested Butte (12-3-1, 5-2-0) is No. 5, Battle Mountain (5-9-2, 1-7-2) is No. 7, DHS is No. 8 and Summit (3-11-2, 0-7-2) is No. 10.
