The Durango High School boys swimming team took its six-man roster to the CHSAA Class 4A Boys Swim and Dive State Championships at the Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center in Thornton last weekend and came away with a couple of consolation finals for their efforts.
Durango finished 23rd as a team with five points. Air Academy rolled to the team championship, scoring 324 points, topping runner-up D’Evelyn’s 239.
The top eight swimmers in preliminaries qualify for the championship finals, while the next eight fall to the consolation finals. Jesse Rubenstein qualified for the consolation final in the 100-yard free style, while Josh Miller did the same in the 100 breaststroke.
Miller finished in 1 minute, 5.76 seconds to finish 14th in Class 4A in the 100 breatstroke after qualifying 13th in 1:05.04.
Rubenstein came in in 50.36 seconds in the 100 freestyle to claim 15th in the state. He qualified 14th in a time of 50.29 seconds.
The 200 medley relay team of Rubenstein, Ben Miller, Josh Miller and Tommy Pannell narrowly missed qualifying for the consolation finals, as well, finishing 17th in the preliminaries with a time of 1:50.42.
Durango’s swimmers this season were Paul Cross, Ben Miller, Josh Miller, Jackson Paine, Pannell and Rubenstein.
