The Durango High School volleyball team picked up its first win of the season Friday against Grand Junction Central. DHS won the contest in three games, 25-7, 25-19 and 25-5.
“I think the kids actually had fun,” said DHS head coach Kelley Rifilato. “It was a group team effort. We were able to get everyone in, and everyone contributed.”
The team has focused on its serves, and it showed. To start the third set, for instance, Leah Wolf served the first 17 points.
“It was nice to see the things we’ve been working on show,” the coach said.
Mason Rowland led the team with 10 kills. Sarah Somrak added 5 kills in 8 attempts.
Brooklyn Messier led the team in digs.
“She was pretty much all over the court,” Rifilato said.
All in all, the coach said she was pleased with how the girls played and controlled the tempo.
“The girls for the most part controlled the tempo of the game and played real volleyball the right way,” Rifilato said. “If we can continue to make strides in the right way, I’m excited for the end of the season. We’re so young, we’re just trying to work on us.”
DHS improved to 1-3, 1-0 Southwestern League with the win, and Central slipped to 1-3, 0-2.
The Demons will play Grand Junction (3-7, 0-1) today in another league test.
