Demons’ volleyball goes 5 again

Durango High tangos with Panthers in Farmington

The Durango High School volleyball team loves close matches.

The Demons played their third five-set match of the season Tuesday night in Farmington against perennial power Piedra Vista.

DHS took an early lead, winning the first set 25-23. But the Panthers battled back to take the next to sets 25-22 and 29-27. The Demons fought back from a big 11-3 hole early in the third set to make it close, and they carried some momentum into the fourth set to win 25-19.

The final five points were neck-and-neck in the decisive fifth set, and Piedra Vista had enough at home to win 15-13.

“We knew what to expect against a good team, and we did a good job battling,” DHS head coach Colleen Vogt said. “Our girls are gaining experience and confidence in tight matches, too. We know how to fight with grit and win.”

The Demons (3-1) were led in kills by Sarah Waller, who had 11.

Lauran Morrissey and Maddie Robertson each had 18 digs, and Robertson added five aces. Addison Swift led Durango with 33 assists. Lia Henriksen had four blocks.

Durango will travel to the Front Range to take on Cherry Creek on Saturday.
