The Durango High School volleyball team beat Grand Junction Central in three games Friday, 25-10, 25-14 and 25-19.

“The first two games were really good, and then we were able to finish,” said DHS head coach Kelley Rifilato.

With tons of players contributing kills, digs, assists and blocks, the coach said she loved the balance from her team in the game.

Leah Wolf had two kills in the first game, three in the second and four in the third game to finish with nine. She also served three aces.

“Leah did great,” Rifilato said. “There wasn’t an aspect of her game that didn’t get better since our last game, and she was a difference maker in the first two games.”

Mason Rowland led the team 12 kills and had 23 assists in the match. Eva Stewart, Riley Engle and Sarah Somrak each had four kills against the Warriors.

Stewart also led the Demons with 25 assists.

Defensively, the team set up its blocking well and almost always had multiple players challenging the Warriors.

“We got our block established and they were trying to hit around it,” Rifilato said. “It created a road block for them.”

The Demons finished with 14 block assists in the match.

Brooklyn Messier also played some strong defense and led the team with 13 digs. “I felt she was all over the place,” Rifilato said.

With the win, DHS improves to 4-5 overall and 3-2 in the 4A/5A Southwestern League. Central slipped to 4-7, 1-5.

“This group is finally starting to get to know each other and they’re starting to gel,” the coach said. “That’s all you can ask – they work hard and have great attitudes.”

The Demons still have over half of their games remaining on their schedule, including another home game at noon on Saturday against Grand Junction High School (3-11, 0-5).
