Demons win six SWL track titles

The Durango High School boys and girls track and field teams raced their Southwestern League foes on Friday in Grand Junction and scored six league championships.

Sofia Voss won two titles to lead the Demons. Voss won both the 800-meter race in 2 minutes, 18.26 seconds and also the 1,600 in 5:20.19.

Jeanne Campbell cleared 5-0 to win the high jump. Campbell also finished third in the long jump (15-11.75) and fourth in the 200 (28.26).

Sydney Wells also won a SWL title for the Demon girls in the pole vault. Wells cleared 9-0 to take first. Teammate Seneca Wilson also cleared 9-0 and placed second while Sonya Tocco finished third (7-0).

Jaxon Fancher and Luke Swenk, meanwhile, captured SWL titles for the DHS boys.

Fancher won the 400 in 49.92 and finished third in the 200 (23.47)

Swenk won the 3,200 by over four seconds in 9:44.94, and Miles Snow crossed fourth in 10:14.92.

A lot of other Demons scored team points with top-five finishes in the meet as well.

Ayumi Lambert crossed second in girls 3,200 in 12:13.91.

In the 100-meter hurdles, Klara Absolonova crossed second (18.01) and Elise Schumann finished third (18.12).

Juliana McKown put together leaps of 30-9.25 to place fourth in the triple jump.

Violet Mazenko tossed the shot put 30-07.00 to finish third.

The DHS girls also finished third in the 4x100 relay (56.22), third in the 4x200 (1:55.67), fourth in the 4x400 (4:34.63), second in the 4x800 (10:36.62) and fourth in the 800 sprint medley (2:10.54).

The DHS boys, meanwhile, placed fourth in the 4x100 (47.04), second in the 4x200 (1:33.15), third in the 4x400 (3:38.60) and second in the 4x800 (8.22.18).

In the 300-meter hurdles, Xavier Sutherlin finished fifth in 44.75, just ahead of teammate Ethan Flores.

In the high jump, Maddox Bryant sailed over 5-10 to finish second while Oliver Clark cleared 5-08 and finished fourth.

Grant Gordon finished second in the pole vault (10-0) while Nash Vareta and Price Bryant tied for fifth (8-06).

In the team races, Fruita Monument scored 104.33 points to win the girls title, followed by Montrose (87), Durango (85.83), Grand Junction (63.50) and Grand Junction Central (53.33).

Montrose won the SWL boys team title with 114 points, followed by Grand Junction Central (95), Grand Junction (74), Durango (52) and Fruita (37).

The Demons will return to Grand Junction on Friday for its final competition before the state championships on May 18, the Dennis Teeters Tiger Invite.
