The Durango High School girls lacrosse team fought through rain, ice, snow and sleet with an evenly matched Santa Fe Prep squad Saturday at DHS.
Though the weather was crummy, the finish was fabulous for Durango. Kiara Valley’s last-minute goal broke a 7-7 tie and the Demons held on as the final seconds ticked away to grab an 8-7 win.
“Kiara is one of our best attackers,” Durango head coach Jeff Einfalt said. “She does a great job of adapting to the game and reading the defense and she came through for us when we needed it.”
Maddie Stutey led Durango with four goals. Valley finished with three and sophomore Kayla Willis added the other.
In a rare occurrance, Durango played the entire game without a goalkeeper.
“Tons of credit to our girls, especially on defense, because our goalkeepers were unavailable for this game and we played the whole time without a goalkeeper,” Einfalt said. “It forced us to work on a few different things and the girls did great.”
Durango went with the same method in the second game of the day against Montrose, and the Demons came away with another victory.
