A day after winning the state giant slalom title, Durango High School junior Toby Scarpella reached the podium again Friday in the slalom championships.
Scarpella flew through the gates the third-fastest first run, 45.85 seconds. His second run of 42.05, however, was more than a second faster than Summit’s Dylan Smith, helping Scarpella pass the Tiger and finish with a silver medal.
Sebastian Wiser of Middle Park won the state title in a combined time of 1:25.58, and Scarpella finished second in 1:27.90, 0.71 seconds ahead of Smith in third.
His teammates also performed well Friday after several didn’t finish in the giant slalom.
Junior Ava McClellan cracked the top 20 in the girls slalom championship with runs of 52.57 and 49.59, placing 18th with a combined time of 1:42.16. Junior Madison LeSage placed 25th out of 72 girls in 1:49.45. Sophomore Annabel Carithers placed 33rd in 1:51.33, and junior Alaysia Cullum finished 38th in 1:54.58.
Paige Peterson of Summit won the girls title in 1:30.07, finishing 0.19 second ahead of Apen’s Cate Simpson.
Sophomore Ian Fehr of Durango finished 22nd out of 68 boys in a combined 1:39.33. Junior Barron Bronson finished 25th in 1:41.32, and freshman Zach Oliver placed 28th in 1:43.03.
Twenty girls and 16 boys didn’t finish Friday, including a few Demons.
Freshman Holden Bronson was in 25th after his first run of 50.48, but didn’t finish his second run. Freshman Lauren McClellan was also in 25th after her first run of 55.37, but also didn’t finish her second run.
Freshman Finn Scarpella didn’t finish his first run.
