Demons’ XC runs to $4,500

Eschewing traditional bake sales and car washes, the Durango High School cross contry team set out on a four-day trail run for a 2013 fundraiser.

The team averaged 18 miles per day over the course of the trip and raised $4,500 for the program.

The Demons began at Little Molas Lake and ran to Bolam Pass via the Cascade Creek drainage on the first day.

They had an early morning yoga session on the second day before moving along the Hotel Draw road to continue their run.

Saturday, they ran along Indian Trail Ridge, where they camped alongside upper Junction Creek road.

On the final day, the team ran up the upper Junction Creek until they reached the High Point lookout.

The Demons raced down and finished their fundraiser amid the cheers of their cross country supporters.

“We had no sooner arrived at the trail’s end when the heaven’s opened and washed all the grime from our tired bodies,” DHS head coach David McMillan said in an email to The Durango Herald.

McMillan said any additional donations can be sent to DHS with a check made out to DHS Cross Country.

The Demons’ cross country team will open its regular season with a meet Aug. 29 at Cheyenne Mountain in Colorado Springs.
