Denver Comic Con readies to open for weekend run

DENVER (AP) – Grab your cape and set phasers to full-on-nerd because Denver Comic Con begins today.

Returning for the second year, the Comic Con will be at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver through Sunday.

Last year’s convention was the second-largest Comic Con opening ever, and event officials are expecting this year to be even bigger.

Film, TV, comic-book and Internet stars and artists will be available to meet as fans shop and listen to panels about education and kids literacy, filmmaking, animation and voice talents, diversity – women’s, minority and GLBT issues – and comics.

Hollywood idol William Shatner will be the guest of honor at the convention on Sunday.

Other celebrities on site include Wil Wheaton, George Takei, Felicia Day and Peter Mayhew, who played Chewbacca in the “Star Wars” films.

Events include a costume contest and, of course, Sci-Fi Speed Dating.

Hours of Denver Comic Con are from 3 to 8 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
