The Durango High School boys golf team showed its depth Tuesday at Montrose’s Black Canyon Golf Club, finishing fourth in the varsity competition and winning the JV event.
The Demons’ varsity shot a 230 as a team, led by Cory Gillespie’s 74.
Bo Ward and Trevor Bogus finished with 78s, Erik Walker an 80 and Cameron Barnhardt an 87.
Cy Spicer shot a 76 to win the JV event and finish 10th overall in the tournament for a Durango JV squad that beat its closest opponent by two strokes.
Daniel McElwain shot an 88, Dillon Hoselton an 89, Garrett Mulkey a 90 and Blake Martin a 96 for Durango’s JV team.
“Cy shooting his first round of high school golf in the 70s was probably our most impressive performance of the day,” DHS head coach Kirk Rawles said.
Spicer had been playing on the varsity team recently, but Rawles went with Walker instead.
Spicer will move back onto the varsity roster Wednesday at The Bridges Golf Club in Montrose, while Barnhardt will play on the JV team.
“I want Erik, Cy and Cameron to all get a lot of varsity starts,” Rawles said. “I want to balance their experience not only for this year, but when they’re juniors and seniors, too.”
