The Durango high school boys’ golf team hit its first plateau of the 2013 season.

The Demons shot a 238 on Wednesday, which tied them with Delta for fourth place at the Devil’s Thumb Golf Club in Delta.

Basalt and Rifle tied for first with a 230, while Montrose finished third with a 234.

Cory Gillespie led the Demons with a 75, followed by Trevor Bogus’ 81, Cy Spicer’s 82, Cameron Barnhardt’s 83 and Bo Ward’s 84.

“They didn’t get as much out of it as they hoped,” DHS boys golf head coach Kirk Rawles said. “Bo has struggled his last couple outings; he’s a little too mechanical instead of just playing.”

Garrett Mulkey won the junior varsity competition for the Demons with an 80. Eric Walker finished with a 93 and Daniel McElwain a 96 for the Demons’ JV squad.

Tristan Rohrbaugh of Basalt finished first in the varsity event with a 71.

The Demons will play Thursday at Cobble Creek Golf Course in Montrose, and they’ll play their next three tournaments in Montrose before hosting their annual Hillcrest Invitational on Sept. 9-10 at Hillcrest Golf Club and Dalton Ranch Golf Club, respectively.

“We’ve found a plateau, and we need to break through into the 70s,” Rawles said. “We have a few right on that doorstep.”
