A bit of lineup shuffling and some improved rounds helped the Durango High School boys golf team shave a few strokes Thursday at Rifle Creek Golf Course in Rifle.
Bo Ward led the Demons with a 79, followed by Garrett Mulkey’s 80, Cy Spicer’s 83, Cory Gillespie’s 84 and Trevor Bogus’ 86, leading to a team score of 242, cutting five shots from Wednesday’s season-opening 247 at Gypsum Creek Golf Course in Gypsum.
DHS head coach Kirk Rawles said the team departed before all scores were tallied, so team scores and standings were unavailable.
“I’m going to say we probably ended up fourth or fifth, somewhere in there,” Rawles said.
Rawles shuffled his varsity lineup Thursday, bringing up Mulkey and Spicer in place of Cameron Barnhardt – who fired an 80 for junior varsity after Wednesday’s 86 on varsity – and Eric Walker.
“I think Garrett’s 80 is probably one of the best rounds he’s ever had in competition,” Rawles said. “So I thought that was really solid for him.
“Cy’s a sophomore, and he kind of had a rough start, but then he played pretty well from the sixth hole in.”
