DHS boys tennis plays perfect at Pueblo South

The Durango High School boys tennis team will roll into the Pueblo Invitational this weekend on the strength of a clean sweep.

DHS topped Pueblo South 6-0 on Thursday, with no match at No. 4 doubles because Pueblo South doesn’t have a team and Durango’s pair stayed home. The Demons didn’t drop a single set.

“Just really great, positive energy, and they were pretty pumped up to come and play and supported all courts,” DHS head coach Laura Ehlers said. “Just a really great vibe.”

Ryder Searle took the victory at No. 1 singles 6-1, 6-4, while Fred Edwards dropped just a single game at No. 2 singles, winning 6-1, 6-0, and Dylan Blair won No. 3 singles for the Demons 6-2, 6-1.

Wesley Komick and Liam Millar gave DHS a win at 1-doubles 6-0, 6-2. Alec Ensign and Jake Schanfarber had to battle in the second set, eventually prevailing 6-4, 7-6 (3), and Tim Martin and Blaise Page swept the competition at 3-doubles 6-0, 6-0.

The sweep provided a good tuneup for what should be tough competition at the Pueblo Invitational on Friday and Saturday.

“It’s going to be tough tennis,” Ehlers said. “Just up against really good schools, so I think they’re just excited to play a lot of matches.”
