The strong start to the 2014 season continued Friday for the Durango High School girls soccer team.
DHS (2-0-1, 2-0-1 Southwestern League) traveled to Grand Junction and took a 4-0 win against Grand Junction Central (0-2-0, 0-2-0 SWL).
It was a big day for DHS freshmen Lane Arlin, who scored two goals, and Peyton Floyd, who scored one. DHS sophomore Madeline Robertson scored the other DHS goal.
“To have freshmen producing this early in the season is phenomenal,” DHS head coach Dalon Parker said.
Friday’s game was scoreless at halftime before Robertson scored the game’s first goal.
“We started out rough in the first half, but that is a given on a road trip,” Parker said. “The second half, we collected ourselves and came around. We got possession, put passes together and scored goals.”
DHS goalie Kelly Perry made four saves in her first start.
“She just got called up from junior varsity (Friday), and she made one very crucial save on a good corner kick,” Parker said.
DHS will play at Grand Junction at 11 a.m. Saturday.
“It would be a big accomplishment for us to get that win, especially after coming up here two weekends in a row,” Parker said. “If we could finish the majority of the first half of our league schedule with three wins and one tie, it would be really good for us walking into the back end of the league. We want to push our way to the top and make a run.”
