DHS fundraiser to help fight hunger

Three organizations, including Manna kitchen, to split the pot
Kaniesha Valley, left, holds the bowl she made for Manna Soup Kitchen’s Empty Bowls benefit dinner in 2010, while friend Tanessa Farly examines her artwork.

The Durango High School student group sponsoring the Empty Bowls soup and bread meal Tuesday have chosen a local, national and international organization as recipients of proceeds from the fundraiser.

The mission of the three organizations is fighting hunger and food scarcity.

Durango’s Manna Soup Kitchen, Feeding America and Heifer International will split the pot.

Manna Soup Kitchen, 1100 Avenida del Sol, provides hot breakfasts and sack lunches for the needy and for homeless people.

Feeding America is a network of 200 food banks founded in 1979 that feeds 46 million people in the United States. Its headquarters are in Chicago. Bob Aiken is the organization’s CEO and president.

Heifer International, founded in 1944 by Dan West, donates animals and agricultural training in foreign countries. Its headquarters are in Little Rock, Arkansas.

The supper of soup and bread being offered from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday in the DHS cafeteria is the third annual Empty Bowls observance for students enrolled in the International Baccalaureate program, which takes a global approach to pedagogy.
