The Durango High School girls’ basketball team began Aztec’s tournament with a 54-26 win over Laguna Acoma (New Mexico) on Thursday.
Mason Rowland, who averages 21 points per game this winter, led Durango with 22 points in the win.
Sydney Flores also reached double digits, adding 14 points for the Demons.
Head coach Tim Fitzpatrick said Riley Campbell “had a great all-around game,” finishing with six points.
On Friday, DHS took on Cuba (New Mexico) in the second round and scored another convincing victory, 52-24.
The Demons improved to 7-3 overall with the wins.
The Durango High School boys also competed in New Mexico on Thursday in Farmington’s tournament. The Demons, however, lost a close game against Gallup (New Mexico), 64-62.
The Demons trailed 31-27 at halftime and 44-36 heading into the fourth quarter. Durango rallied in the fourth and closed the gap but couldn’t pull out the victory.
Anthony Flint scored 22 points to lead DHS. Tyler Harms added 12, and Dylan Bettin and Jacob Nuebert both scored six.
DHS slipped to 5-3 overall after the loss.
The Demons were scheduled to return to the court Friday night against Farmington and will conclude the tournament at Bloomfield (New Mexico) Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
The Bayfield High School girl’s basketball team hosted Ignacio in a La Plata County showdown on Friday. Ignacio, however, scored a convincing win over the Wolverines, 57-16.
The game was close early with Ignacio leading 8-6 after the first quarter. In the second quarter, however, Ignacio outscored the Bayfield 19-0 to take a commanding lead that it only expanded. Ignacio won the third quarter 11-5 and owned the fourth, 19-5.
The only aspect Ignacio showed any weakness was at the free throw line where the team finished 6 for 17.
Harmony Reynolds racked up 19 points and snagged at least 11 rebounds for the ‘Cats. Avaleena Nanaeto added 11, Laci Brunson and Darlyn Mendoza-Lechuga both scored 10 while Marissa Olguin chipped in five..
For Bayfield, Abby Tate fought hard for every one of her seven points. Jordan Martindale added four.
With the win, Ignacio improved to 3-3 overall while BHS moved to 0-5.
