A late surge defensively lifted the Demons to their first victory.
The Durango High School girls basketball team rallied to force overtime, then held off Harrison 32-27 on the second day of play at the Hornet Holiday Tournament on Friday in Pueblo.
“It’s good to have a game at the beginning of the season that you get pushed and stretched and have to keep a level head and play smart, and they did that,” DHS head coach Nancy Smith said of her squad, playing down four varsity regulars because of ineligibity and injury.
Durango (1-1) rallied from five points down after three quarters to force the overtime, then scored early and played a bit of keepaway from the Panthers, evading intense ball pressure after having racheted up their own late in regulation.
“They dug in and brought it back to overtime, and in overtime, stuff just opened up,” Smith said. “We scored a quick bucket and held the ball.”
Katrina Chandler filled the stat sheet with nine points and seven rebounds to go with a pair of steals. Katie Wiegert had six points and five assists, while Taylor Edwards chipped in six points and Stephanie Basye seven rebounds.
