The Durango High School girls’ golf team shined on Monday at the Bookcliff Country Club in Grand Junction.

Zayda Mestas broke 80 for the second time this season. Natasha Walcott, Eliza Bosmans and Jayden Craig all shot personal best scores. Ellie White joined her four teammates in the top-seven of the individual standings, and DHS beat 14 teams to win the Tiger Invitational by 13 strokes.

Mestas shot a 79 to lead DHS, finishing tied for first place with Lenna Persson of Aspen. It was Mestas’ second straight first-place finish and her second-best tournament score of the year. Her best score of the year is a 77, which helped her finish second in the Durango’s home tournament at the Hillcrest Golf Course.

Walcott shot an 81 to place third at the Tiger Invitational.

Craig finished fifth with an 86 to round out Durango’s team score.

Ellie White shot an 87 to finish sixth and Bosman’s shot an 88 to place seventh. Besides Persson and her teammate Brooke O’Sullivan (fourth, 83), Bosmans finished ahead of every golfer from every other team as the Demons dominated on the day.

DHS finished first as a team with a 246, followed by Aspen (259) and Montezuma-Cortez (275) in third. Amita Crowley (eighth, 89) and Chesnie Patrick (10th, 90) led M-CHS. Montrose finished fourth with a 290, followed by Palisade (292), Fruita Monument (299), Rifle (303), Glenwood Springs (312), Grand Junction Central (312), Moffat County (331), Palisade 2 (334), Grand Junction (335), Gunnison (340), Palisade 3 (373) and Meeker (375).

Playing well at Bookcliff also bodes well for DHS as it prepares for the postseason. Bookcliff will also be the venue for the 4A Region 1 championships on May 22.

Before then, the Demons will play once more in Montrose, in a rescheduled tournament, in its final tuneup for regionals.
