A microcosm of the Durango High School girls lacrosse season, the Demons regular-season finale was close and competitive throughout.
Durango, which finished in the middle of the Mountain League pack, has been saddled with numerous one-goal losses this season. Playing its final two games of the season on the road, the Demons needed to win out to reach .500.
They did, winning two close games.
Durango beat Aspen 7-5 on Friday and Steamboat Springs 10-8 on Saturday to finish its season 7-7. The game was pretty close for a lot of the game, Demons head coach Jenni Darlow said. Of course, we made life difficult on ourselves. Durangos three-goal lead shrunk to two with about three minutes to play.
Our passing was atrocious, Darlow said.
The hustle was there on defense and to gain possession but the Demons simply threw it away over and over and over and over again, Darlow said. We did some good things, though. We had a ton of hustle, and defensively we did a good job; our transition D did a good job; we just shouldnt have been on defense as much as we were. On Kentucky Derby day, Sara Martin was the Demons workhorse in the midfield, the senior co-captains coach said. She was all over the place, to the tune of eight groundballs and five forced turnovers.
Senior captain Alyssa Montoya had a hat trick, two goals assisted by senior Hannah Quick, who also had a goal.
Sophia Quick, the seniors freshman sister, had two goals. Angela Grogan, Tymbree Hawkins and Payton Randle each scored a goal, and freshman goalie Cheyenne Coffey was awesome with six saves, her head coach said. Every game she looks more comfortable, Darlow said. Grand Junction will represent the Mountain League in the state tournament, and with four first-round exits in the last five years, Darlow thinks the league only will receive the seeding committees automatic bid.
