After a tough home loss last week, the Durango Demons wanted nothing more than to return the favor to Battle Mountain.
Durango High School did just that Saturday, defeating the Huskies 9-8 in Vail. The final score was the exact opposite result as when Battle Mountain (6-3, 5-2 Mountain League) defeated the Demons (3-7, 2-4 ML) on April 4 in Durango.
“It wasn’t really a pretty win, but a win is a win, so we’re all happy,” DHS head coach Jenni Darlow said. “To get the opposite of last week’s score with us on top was great.”
The game was a back-and-forth contest throughout. DHS played a strong first half, but Darlow felt uneasy with some miscues in the second half.
DHS senior attacker Jessie Sutherlin scored four goals and assisted on another DHS goal.
Angela Grogan, Tymbree Hawkins, Kelsey Pool, Payton Randle and Alyssa Swan combined to score the other five DHS goals. Hawkins also added two assists.
Darlow said the key to the victory was winning the draw control and possession battle.
Swan dominated the midfield and scooped up five groundballs, Darlow said.
Although the Demons lost their first seven contests of the season, Darlow is pleased with the team’s three-game winning streak and hopes to keep it going at 4 p.m. Friday at Santa Fe Prep in New Mexico.
“It would be great to win out and get to .500,” Darlow said.
