Heading toward decision time for playoff spots, wins over Class 5A soccer teams are big for 4A squads. And the Durango High School’s girls side picked up a pretty good one on the road to cap the regular season.
The Demons scored twice in the final 10 minutes of the first half to top Fruita Monument 2-0 on Saturday in a matchup of two teams battling for second place in the Southwestern League.
Durango (10-4-1, 6-3-1 SWL) scored on a penalty kick after the Wildcats (7-6-1, 5-3-1 SWL) were whistled for a hand ball in the penalty area with about 10 minutes remaining in the half.
The backbreaker came with about two minutes to go in the opening frame. Lauren Milliet’s flip throw led to a header that Fruita Monument goalkeeper Kylie Goetz tipped, but the ball popped into the air toward a waiting Jessi Sigillito, who headed it in for a 2-0 advantage.
Durango found a way to bury opportunities after getting the better of the run of play but falling short 1-0 on Friday against Grand Junction, this time getting the better of Fruita Monument, which was playing without offensive threats Courtney Coffey and Jordan Padgett, who were injured.
“We didn’t play bad (Friday),” DHS head coach Dalon Parker told The Sentinel in Grand Junction. “We just didn’t finish. (Saturday) we played like we did (Friday), and this time we finished.”
With the regular season over, DHS now must wait to find out its postseason fate. Playoff games will begin May 7.
