DHS girls to play for league crown

Twice in two weeks the Durango Demons slayed the mighty Montrose Indians.

The Durango High School girls basketball team shook off a rough Class 4A/5A Southwestern League season with an upset win against Montrose in the regular season finale, and they added an exclamation point with a 38-24 win against the Indians in the Class 4A Southwestern League/Western Slope League tournament semifinals Friday at Colorado Mesa University in Grand Junction.

Katie Wiegert scored 14 points, while the Demons dominated play all over the court.

“Stephanie Bayse, Taylor Edwards and Danica Dudley dominated the inside and knocked down jumpers outside,” DHS head coach Tim Fitzpatrick said.

DHS will advance to the tournament championship game. The Demons will play Palisade at 2 p.m. in the title game. The Demons already have earned a bit in the CHSAA Class 4A state tournament.
