An important acknowledgement was left out of a news story on Feb. 14 in The Durango Herald – Durango High School’s student-led Green Team. The article featured the decision of 9-R’s school board to move ahead with solar panel installments at six schools, including DHS, with more to follow.
The Green Team’s solar proposal was its first project when formed in May 2022. Despite being told a number of times the project was too expensive and simply a “dream,” the team pressed on. With the influence of the team’s long-standing dogged determination, 9-R decided to take the proposal forward. The team’s appearance before the school board in January influenced the board’s decision. The dream of capturing the sun’s rays on the school’s roof is now a reality.
The Green Team was co-founded in May 2002 by President Aisha O’Neil, now a senior. This energetic team of students, advised by Spanish teacher Brett Wilson, has been tackling one project after another. They have consulted and collaborated with experts, including Mountain Studies Institute, Table to Farm and the Sierra Club. Voter registration is also high on the list.
The team is now onto the next project of supporting Colorado Senate Bill 24-014, a Seal of Climate Literacy Diploma Endorsement earned by completing extensive high school climate education.
Watch out Colorado Senate, here they come!
