The Durango Demons’ boys swimming team began the spring season with a third-place finish. The Demons scored 196 team points at the Southwest Conference Boys Relays on Saturday in Grand Junction.

They finished behind Montrose, who scored 414 team points, and a team comprised of swimmers from Fruita Monument, Grand Junction, Grand Junction Central and Palisade, who scored 404 team points.

Glenwood Springs took fourth place with 170 points, and Moffat County was fifth with 106.

Durango’s top finish was in the 200-meter free relay with Paul Cross, Ben Miller, Josh Miller and Tommy Pannell competing in that event. The Demons took second with a time of 1 minute, 39.70 seconds.

Glenwood Springs was first in the 200 free relay at 1:37.86.

The Demons also swam well in the 400-meter free relay, finishing in 3:43.77 with the Miller’s, Pannell and Howard Richards competing. But the Demons were well behind first-place Montrose, who finished in 3:31.19 in that event.
