DHS parking crackdown hurts students and neighbors

Dear Durango neighbors,

Durango High School recently cracked down on parking. Dozens of cars were booted and ticketed for parking without passes or with fake passes.

DHS parking passes are sold out, and none are available to high school students. Parking passes for the fairgrounds are also sold out. As a result, more students are parking in the Needham neighborhood, around Alamo Drive, and near the Rec Center.

Students who are just trying to go to school are paying large fines and walking longer distances, while Durango residents are being inconvenienced.

All of this is happening while existing DHS parking remains underutilized. The “dirt” lot north of DHS sits essentially empty most days, with well over 100 unused spots.

Why? While the school claims this is “a fact without a solution,” DHS could easily address the problem by issuing parking passes for the dirt lot, maximizing existing space instead of penalizing students who are trying to get an education.
