Durango High School started its Class 4A Southwestern League/Western Slope League District Tournament victory with a “tough blue-collar win.”
Durango, the No. 2 seed at the tournament, beat No. 7 Delta 45-41 on Thursday night in Grand Junction.
“We never really got going,” DHS boys basketball head coach Alan Batiste said. “Both teams struggled.”
Durango struggled with Delta’s size – 6-5, 6-5, 6-6.
“They got some easy baskets in transition, and we went 2-for-13 from outside,” Batiste said.
“But we found a way.”
Dane Mestas led the Demons with 14 points, while Trent Andrews had 11 points and six rebounds and Isaiah Mayberry four points and eight rebounds.
“It was good to get that one out of the way,” Batiste said.
Durango (13-6) will play No. 6 Montrose at 4:30 p.m. Friday at Colorado Mesa University.
