Eagle Valley might not have been the toughest opponent on Durango’s calendar, but a win is a win.
And in this case, the Durango Demons’ softball team earned two.
Durango High School defeated Eagle Valley 21-1 in Game 1 and 21-0 in Game 2; both home games lasted only three innings by the Colorado 20-run rule.
The bottom line for head coach Mike Cioppa: “We hit the ball well; we caught the ball well,” he said. “It’s amazing what you can do when you do that.”
Rebekah Ford, the Demons’ freshman second baseman, hit her third home run of the season, which former head coach John Bernazzani thought was a DHS record. Katelyn DeLuche also homered for the Demons.
DHS scored five in the first, 14 in the second and two in the third of its Game 1 victory – all on just seven hits and seven Eagle Valley errors.

Augusta Brockus (Game 1) and Alexys Vidunas (Game 2) each threw one-hitters for victories.
“Both pitchers just shut ’em down,” Cioppa said. “In a tough situation, they just went out and dominated.”
Brockus had three hits, five runs and two runs batted in from the 3-hole; Vidunas had five hits, six runs and one RBI as the leadoff hitter.
Ford had three hits, five runs and four RBIs from the 2-hole.
Danica Dudley had two hits, three runs and two RBIs.
Sierra McCloskey had a hit, three runs scored and four RBIs.
Deryn Candelaria had one hit, three runs and two RBIs.
Katrina Chandler had two hits, one run and three RBIs.
Cindy Kobrin had two hits, three runs and three RBIs.
DeLuche had three hits, five runs and five RBIs in the two-game sweep.
“Some new kids got some hits for us, too,” Cioppa said.
DHS (5-9, 4-9 Southwestern League) will host Rifle at 10 a.m. and noon Saturday at Aspen Field on the Fort Lewis College campus.
