The Durango High School boys lacrosse team played in Denver for the first time Friday night.
The result was a 14-5 loss to No. 5-ranked Valor Christian.
“We came out nervous and were down 4-0 before we knew it,” DHS head coach John Robinette said. “We were dropping the ball and had too many unforced turnovers and missed assignments on defense.”
The Demons (4-2, 2-1 Mountain League) trailed 11-2 at halftime against the Eagles (4-3), but DHS matched Valor Christian 3-3 in the second half.
“I like the way the kids responded in the second half. They played hard, and we were able to capitalize,” Robinette said. “Once we settled down and ran our offense and set plays, we scored. We had a lot of shots in the game; we just didn’t finish many of them.”
Trevor Gabbard scored two DHS goals. Jacob Boyle, Jared Cook and Liam Millar all scored one goal, and Millar added an assist. DHS goalie Walker Brown made 12 saves.
Kyle Robinette led the team with eight groundballs, and Westley Moore scooped up six groundballs. Boyle won 6-of-12 faceoffs.
