The Desert Twilight Open in Phoenix had 37 Durango High School runners compete across six divisions.
The Demons took 13th place out of 27 teams in the Sole Sports Boys Sweepstakes division, the second highest boys division for the meet, and eighth out of 21 teams in the girls Sweepstakes division.
Arizona’s Corona del Sol High School won the boys division, while Desert Vista, also from Arizona, took first in the girls.
The Demons’ Gordon Gianniny came in 52nd place in the individual race in 16 minutes, 19 seconds. Alastair McMillan followed in 70th at 16:34, Nicholas Turco in 80th at 16:39, Joe Crawford in 89th at 16:44, Benjamin Lachelt in 128th at 17:15, Seamus Millett in 140th at 17:22 and Weston Paige in 141st at 17:24.
Corona del Sol’s Nate Rodriguez finished in first place in the boys individual race at 15:08.
Shannon Maloney clinched DHS’ best finish in the Sweepstakes division by coming in 12th place at 18:15.
“Maloney ran superbly up in the pack,” DHS head coach David McMillan said.
For DHS, Hannah Peterson finished in 32nd at 18:51, Marley Weaver Gabel in 95th at 20:21, Emily Schaldach in 101st at 20:29, Katarina Seibert in 107th at 20:39 and Emily Fogel in 126th at 21:05.
Desert Vista’s Dani Jones won the girls individual race in 17:19.
The Demons’ junior varsity came in eighth in the girls small school open division and first in the boys small school open.
For DHS, Becca Schaldach came in 18th place in the girls individual race at 24:22, Alle McKown in 29th at 25:48, Sydney McMunn in 30th at 25:45, Sarah Harrelson in 42nd at 26:51 and Raquel Hyatt in 72nd at 31:53.
Sean McLaughlin led four DHS boys in the top 10 of the boys individual race in third place at 17:24. Jacob Branch came in sixth place at 17:50, River Weiss in seventh at 17:57, David Moenning in 10th at 18:05, Garrett Mulkey in 13th at 18:15, Rees Gibbons in 14th at 18:22 and Jordan Helms in 24th at 19:04.
DHS finished first in the boys freshmen small school division and first in the girls freshmen small school division.
Demons’ runners took first place in the freshmen small school boys and girls races: Christoph Cikraji finished in 18:01 and Emily Edwards-Colsman in 21:37.
For DHS, Maggie Wigton placed second in the girls race in 22:48, Sarah Smagacz third in 22:56, Elli Trussel seventh in 27:44 and Kenna Willis 11th in 34:41.
Harry Steinberg followed Cikraji in fifth at 18:40, Kaleb Harris in 14th at 20:20, Max Patton in 20th at 21:05, Sam Dippold in 30th at 22:23, Korin Walsh in 47th at 27:38 and Hunter Hyatt in 52nd at 29:44.
“We ran Durango’s team style to perfection,” McMillan said.
DHS next will compete at regionals Oct. 18 in Delta.
