DHS tennis competes at Western Slope Open

The Durango High School girls’ tennis team competed at the Western Slope Open on Friday and Saturday in Grand Junction and managed to finish ahead of the four teams in the Southwestern League.

Durango scored 88 points in the competition, which was good enough to place ninth out of the 16 teams in the tournament.

DHS won at least one match at six of the seven positions while three of its four doubles teams won at least two.

At No. 1 singles, Ellie Davenport lost a long match to start the tournament against Denver East, 6-1, 1-6 and 10-6. Davenport came back and beat Steamboat Springs 8-7 (7-5) but lost in the third round to Regis Jesuit of Aurora (8-0).

At No. 2 singles, Adwyn Chowen fell in straight sets to Mountain Vista (Highlands Ranch), 6-0, 6-0, but came back and scored an 8-6 win against Fruita Monument. She then faced Denver East and lost a close contest 8-7 (8-6).

Jordan Kitchens battled at No. 3 singles, but fell 7-5, 6-0 against Chatfield (Littleton) and 8-4 against Grand Junction Central.

Juliet DiGiacomo and Ellie McClean won their first match at No. 1 doubles 6-2, 6-3 against Poudre (Fort Collins), but lost 8-0 to Regis and 8-5 to Grand Junction Central.

At No. 2 doubles, Sydney Pritchard and Lola Bradshaw finished 2-2. The duo beat Palmer Ridge (Monument) 6-3, 6-4 and then Chaparral (Parker) 8-7 (7-5) before falling to Denver East 8-4 and Ralston Valley (Arvada) 8-2.

Rachel Ager and Avery Edgar also went 2-2 at No. 3 doubles. They started with wins against Regis, 2-6, 7-5 (10-4) and Chaparral (8-5), but came up short against Mountain Vista, 8-5, and Denver East (8-4).

The team’s No. 4 doubles duo, Addie Cady and Litzy Lopez, went 3-1. The duo lost its first match to Ralston Valley, 6-0, 6-2 but responded by beating Montrose, 8-0, Grand Junction 8-2 and Denver East 8-3.

The Demons also had a dual against Steamboat Springs on Thursday in Grand Junction and beat the Sailors 6-1 to improve to 2-1 in head-to-head matches. Steamboat won at No. 1 singles, but DHS won the rest of the bouts.

Durango is scheduled to play on its home courts for one of the few times this season against Grand Junction Central on Thursday. The two teams will face off beginning at 1 p.m. at DHS.
