The defending Southwestern League volleyball champions got their title defense off to a great start Friday.
Durango High School swept Grand Junction Central 3-0 (25-22, 28-25, 25-20) on Friday night in Grand Junction.
After a rough 2-5 start against quality competition in a pair of early-season tournaments, the Demons got back to familiar territory and familiar results to improve to 3-5 and 1-0 in the SWL.
“It felt really good,” senior Berkeley Davis said in a phone interview with The Durango Herald. “We worked really hard against some tough teams in those tournaments, and it’s really nice to start league; we’ve been waiting for it for awhile.”
Davis and Jessie Brammer shared the team lead in kills with eight apiece. Bella Bernazzani led the way for DHS with 7½ blocks to go with 4½ from Brammer, while Alli Davis had 13 assists and Logan Clark 11 for the Demons.
“We went out there and wanted to make a statement, and I think we did,” Davis said. “I think that this is providing us with momentum for the rest of our league.”
Davis and the Demons will travel to take on Fruita Monument at 11:30 a.m. Saturday.
