DHS wrestling goes 2-3 at Maverick Duals

Lavengood sets the pace at 5-0 against some tough competition

The Durango High School wrestling team went 2-3 on Saturday at the Maverick Duals in Grand Junction, the Demons’ first big meet of the season after a season-opening loss to Broomfield on Thursday.

The Demons picked up a win over Olathe 36-29 and one over Coal Ridge against a 63-16 loss to Palisade and setbacks against Fruita Monument and Meeker. Scores for the Coal Ridge, Fruita Monument and Meeker duals weren’t immediately available.

Demons’ head coach John Gurule said he was pleased with the improvements made by his charges after the loss in the first meet of the season.

“I don’t know if we had some jitters going up against Broomfield, but we wrestled better this weekend. ... They went out and wrestled hard. I was proud of them,” Gurule said.

Matthew Lavengood swept all five of his matches for Durango at 120 pounds, and Joe Crawford won a pair at 145.

“Matthew Lavengood went 5-0 and according to his dad went up against some ranked competition in other classes, so that was some good wrestling by him,” Gurule said.

Each DHS wrestler walked away with at least one victory Saturday. The rest of the DHS roster included Tristan Martinez (106 pounds), Devon Pound (113), Hunter Hall (126), Cole Gustavson (132), Nick Vasquez (138), Henry Dorr (152), David Etz (170), Patrick Cunnion (182) and Mark Trujillo (220).

“We’re headed in the right direction, definitely,” Gurule said.
