If you care about civil rights, your vote should be for Diane Mitsch Bush. Ratings by civil rights groups do not favor Rep. Scott Tipton: The NAACP rated him 0 percent on civil rights; the ACLU scored him at 7 percent. In 2017, Tipton voted to overturn the 2014 Fair Pay and Safe Workplace Executive Order requiring the federal government to contract only with companies that comply with federal workplace safety, sexual harassment, anti-discrimination and wage laws.
He also voted to overturn protections for historically marginalized students, such as people of color, disabled, English learners, immigrants, girls, Native Americans, LBGTQ, and low-income earners. Finally, he opposed HR 3354 that would have ensured the federal government did not contract with entities that willfully and repeatedly violate minimum-wage and overtime laws.
On the other hand, in 2017 Rep. Mitsch Bush co-sponsored legislation which created a pilot program to provide group therapy for youths in correction centers instead of seclusion or mechanical restraints. In 2016, she supported the law prohibiting employers from seeking salary history from applicants. The aim was to hire for the position, rather than the lowest-paid applicant, because people of color and women historically are paid less. She co-sponsored a bill that requires employers of 50 or more to comply with federal Equal Pay Standards, prohibiting them from paying lower rates for similar work based on discrimination.
Diane Mitsch Bush is the clear choice who will uphold human rights and fight for equal protection for all.
