The article about the clash between Durango protesters and federal ICE agents was entirely sympathetic to the protesters and the illegal immigrants involved (Herald, Oct. 29). The facts about the immigrants seem to be in flux, whether they crossed the border illegally, etc., so let’s wait for that to be sorted out.
What is apparently clearer is that some Durango-area residents deliberately blocked and hindered ICE agents from performing their duties: a local and federal offense.
The question is whether the Durango Police Department arrested or cited any of the lawbreakers, or if they quietly didn’t enforce the laws because Durango is a de facto Sanctuary City.
If the Durango City Council is OK with the DPD not enforcing certain laws for political reasons, shouldn’t The Durango Herald and the city publicize that fact so citizens are informed? The citizens voted for government administrators, not political hand-holding.
