I object to Mike Smedley’s use of his ostensibly humorous column (Herald, June 8) to propagate the notion that pit bulls are an inherently vicious breed.
The scores of responsible owners in Durango of this exceptional breed are insulted by the suggestion that they would release their pets for the “dangerous spectacle” Smedley envisions and would shun, as we all should, irresponsible owners who would. I refer Smedley to the website of a praiseworthy local organization established by two middle-school students supporting pit bull education and awareness, Pitbulls4People. Perhaps Smedley would be so good as to buy one of their T-shirts (proceeds from which support the good work of the La Plata County Humane Society). That is a sleeve on which he can wear his mea culpa.
