Here is a copy of the letter I sent the railroad; I just sent it so have not heard back:
“Hi, I’m a 12-year Durango resident and live downtown, and I am very concerned about your black billowing clouds of smoke. I’m happy for you that you make lots of money running tourists up and down the mountain, but it’s all of our air you are polluting. What is in that smoke anyway, and how toxic is it? Is it endangering my health? I can taste it in my mouth for a long time after your trains pass, and if there is little or no wind, it settles like smog over the entire town.”
This is true: this train billows out clouds of black smoke that settles on my furniture and in my lungs.
What is in it anyway? Is it harmful to my health?
