Doing Durango proud

Recent Durango High School graduates Evatt Salinger and Emma Buchanan performed the national anthem in front of almost 31,000 people Wednesday at the Colorado Rockies game Wednesday at Coors Field in Denver. The two, awarded Outstanding Performance by an Actor and Actress in a Leading Role, will represent Colorado at a national competition in New York City.

The world is getting larger for recent Durango High School graduates Evatt Salinger and Emma Buchanan.

They performed a memorable “Les Misérables” before hundreds of Durangoans. They owned the stage at the Bobby G Awards in front of 2,000 people in Denver to win Outstanding Performance by an Actor and Actress in a Leading Role.

And now their audience has grown exponentially – the talented duo nailed “The Star-Spangled Banner” singing in front of almost 31,000 people Wednesday at the Colorado Rockies game. A cappella and in perfect harmony, no less. It was the first time either student had set foot in a major sports stadium.

Their next stop is New York City, where they will be competing in the National High School Musical Theatre Awards the last week in June. Part of their experience will include singing on a Broadway stage, yet another big-world experience.

Buchanan is the daughter of Amy and Evan Buchanan, and Salinger is the son of Peter Salinger and Sally Zabriskie.
