Don’t call me “they” because I disagree

Am I part of the “they?” You know, the “they” of the so-called “radical left” whom certain Republican figures are blaming for causing our collective downfall?

  • I believe in free markets and free trade. Does that make me a conservative, a Republican?
  • I believe in a strong defense of our democracy. Again, am I a conservative, a Republican?
  • I believe that overregulation of industry in some sectors has led to stagnation and higher costs.
  • I believe in freedom of speech.
  • I believe that the government should stay out of my private choices about religion, sex, and which books, papers, or media I consume.
  • I believe in the rule of law – for everyone.
  • I believe in telling the truth.
  • I believe policymakers should understand statistics if they want to make scientific pronouncements and decisions.
  • I believe in free and fair elections for all citizens.
  • I believe in the American dream of providing equality of opportunity.
  • I believe in fairness; the government shouldn’t pick winners and losers in business.
  • I believe that making policy decisions in government is complicated. Issues have gray areas. To move forward, we often need to compromise.
  • I believe in listening to those with whom I don’t agree.

So, you can call me a liberal/libertarian/conservative patriot if you like, but don’t call me “they” just because I may disagree with you. And, I won’t call you “they” either. Maybe then we can start listening and talking.
