Don’t fall for scam; it’s not an IRS agent

Another day, another new scam.

This time, a recorded telephone message says the caller is from the Internal Revenue Service and that an arrest warrant for the recipient has been issued.

The recipient is instructed to call another number for more information.

The IRS scam is one of many, La Plata County Sheriff’s spokesman Dan Bender said in a release. Other callers may falsely claim to be from utilities or clearinghouses for prize winners or to be a friend or family member who needs money after being robbed or falsely jailed for drug abuse, Bender said.

Bender said he has received four bogus calls on his private phone this week alone. No IRS calls, but he was told by one caller that “a warrant for your arrest will be issued by the magistrate.” If he called back, the caller said he’d try to keep the person out of jail.

Do not return phone calls or emails, Bender said. Do not give personal information or bank account or credit-card numbers.

If there is doubt about the authenticity of the contact, call the person or the institution mentioned to verify, Bender said.
