As pointed out in a letter to the editor Oct. 1 from Julie Meadows, yes the train is loud, attracts tourists all year, most likely is responsible for the 416 Fire and like virtually all other human activities, causes pollution.
I personally am neutral on the presence of the train but recognize that it is a key characteristic that defines Durango. I moved here knowing it was already here. And according to her statement, it predated her arrival in Durango also.
So, if she dislikes the train so much, she should feel free to move away. Consider Aztec, it’s not that far away, you can’t hear the train from there and there are far fewer tourists. Aztec is generally less expensive so that could be a plus and her departure would open up one additional housing unit in Durango for those who do like it here.
So, in a way she could assist with the housing shortage problems that Durango is facing. It sounds like moving away would be the socially responsible thing to do.
