Durango is a dog friendly town, some might say obsessed. We have two dogs ourselves and all of our neighbors have dogs.
People leave water out for dogs being walked as do downtown businesses. Some restaurants even welcome well-behaved dogs under the tables. Unfortunately, dog owners don’t seem to be as well-behaved as their pets.
There has been an explosion of dog poop along the Anima River Trail and hiking trails in the national forest, owners are not cleaning up after their pets.
Almost worse are the owners who pick up after their dog, then leave the neat little parcel along the side of the trail, perhaps thinking there is a poop-bag fairy that will come along and pick it up.
Yesterday, I picked up a large dog pile on the beach at 29th Street. Families bring their kids to play in the sand and cool themselves in the water. We don’t need to be dodging poop bombs, let alone that poop eventually gets into the river and our drinking supply. Parks & Recreation has dog bag dispensers along the river trail. Please, use them, then dispose of them properly.
