Don’t shoot the messenger of freedom

In response to the press-damning opinion by Norma Byrd (Herald, May 14), I felt I needed to make a few corrections. She has stated that a cadre of hacks are hell-bent on destroying America through innate ignorance or concentrated intent.

In response to the unsavory reporting on President Donald Trump’s, eh, love life shall we say, she says that John F. Kennedy fooled around without it being reported. Well, not so fast. Back then, the news did not report those types of things, which is why they didn’t report on Franklin Roosevelt’s and Dwight Eisenhower’s mistresses either. When it became acceptable, it all came out, which is how Byrd knows about them.

As far as Bill Clinton’s affair being brushed off, not so much. He was impeached in 1998. The Senate acquitted him. Mr. Trump has the added interest of contribution funds possibly being used for payoffs. The news will keep us up on that.

Regarding all of the complaints against (President Barack) Obama, yet again the press did report those gaffes. Mr. Trump simply has a lot more of them to report and they are much larger than giving a cassette of your speeches to the queen (which I admit I never heard of and seems harmless).

What I got out of the opinion was that the press isn’t supposed to report on Trump’s mistakes, contradicting the argument. The last defense for our freedom is the press. Let them report.

Vote for someone else if you don’t like what you read. Don’t shoot the messenger of freedom.
