Don’t understand reasons for the march

Frankly, I was not enamored of either candidate, although I did vote for the one who seemed less problematic, but now that we have a president in place, I fail to understand the nationwide women’s march which, in essence, was a protest against the Trump administration and an effort to protect rights which are already on the books.

We American women have more freedom and rights than in virtually any other country or culture on Earth. What indication is there that these will now be threatened?

Trump has women in his administration from a multitude of ethnic backgrounds and creeds, in positions of power and responsibility.

His inaugural speech emphasized an “orderly and peaceful transition of power,” a nation rebuilt and restored to all of our people, not controlled by politicians who have prospered at our expense, a nation that belongs to all “where there is no room for prejudice,” where we are safe, seeking “friendship and goodwill with the nations of the world,” shining as an example for all with common dreams and purposes and pursued with “courage and goodness and love.”

Why aren’t these protestors spending their time, energy, efforts and money more productively? Didn’t they hear and understand these words? Why, instead of carrying signs insulting and totally rejecting the new administration, didn’t they march to support the words and promises made? Words endorsing the principles of democracy and calling for unity?

Why have they been so quick to accept the bias of the media in portraying our president as racist and sexist? Do they not understand the meaning of illegal? Have they never laughed off flippant and explicit sexual comments and jokes made by virtually everyone they know about others without condemning their expression?

There are often major disconnects between words and actions. Our major obligation and objective now should be to “love one another,” to support the words of the inaugural speech by demanding corresponding actions, not to deny the possibility with negativism and stone throwing and marching through the streets dishonoring the president (and in so doing dishonoring the principles upon which this country was founded).
