Downtown Durango’s Beads & Beyond installs storefront ‘visual puzzle’

Can you match this window display to holiday theme songs, stories or movies?

If you’re walking past the 800 block of Main Street in downtown Durango, you may notice a window display a bit out of the ordinary. One meant to catch the eye and incite participation.

Located at 840 Main Ave., Beads & Beyond, in the holiday spirit, recently installed a 25-days of Christmas themed window display, but this year, decided to add a twist.

Deemed a “visual puzzle,” manager Emily Miller said there are 25 numbered scenes, which passers-by are encouraged to stop and figure out what holiday song, story or movie they’re trying to portray.

For instance, in one of the scenes, a Barbie doll dressed as a grandmother is flat on the ground, with a reindeer not too far behind. Any guesses?

“It’s just something we wanted to do to bring the community together for people walking by,” Miller said. “We just hope people think it’s as fun as we think it is.”

Miller said the display is her brainchild, made possible through the store’s owners and employees. She said she saw a similar idea through an iPhone app, and wanted to spruce up the store’s display from previous years.

Beads & Beyond will draw a winner every Sunday leading up until Christmas, awarding holiday prizes for correct answers. Miller said passers-by are encouraged to stop in the store to submit guesses.
