Driver in critical condition after U.S. Highway 160 rollover

Driver not wearing seat belt in 5 a.m. crash

A 23-year old Bayfield man remained in critical condition late Monday after the car he was driving went out of control and drove off U.S. Highway 160 near Bayfield.

Frances Taylor was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, and was thrown from the vehicle.

He was taken to Mercy Regional Medical Center in Durango, and then flown by helicopter to St. Anthony Hospital in Lakewood.

The two passengers – Tomas Cruz-Villalobos, 23, and Rebecca Carter, 38, both of Durango – were wearing seat belts, and were taken to Mercy with moderate injuries.

As of Monday afternoon, Carter had been released, and Cruz-Villalobos was listed in good condition.

According to Colorado State Patrol Trooper Nate Reid, the 1997 Ford Contour was eastbound on Highway 160 near mile post 96 about 5 a.m. when Taylor lost control.

Reid said the car crossed the center lane, and hit a speed limit sign and reflector post before it drove off the left side of the road and rolled.

No citations had been issued as of Monday afternoon.
