Driver, passenger in Silverton car chase identified

James Lampley, 24, of Clovis, N.M., arrested

The people who allegedly stole a van in Durango and led deputies on a high-speed chase near Silverton before driving off U.S. Highway 550 have been identified.

James Lampley, 24, of Clovis, New Mexico, was arrested by Durango Police on suspicion of first-degree motor vehicle theft, a felony. It is unclear Wednesday what charges he might face in San Juan County. The passenger, Amanda Davalos, 30, of Tucson, Arizona, was not charged. It is unclear what charges, if any, she faces in San Juan County.

According to Lt. Ray Shupe, the two stole a white 1996 Ford van from a construction site at 3416 Main Ave., on Monday.

While Durango Police were investigating, the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office had a report of a drunken driver near a campground in Silverton. As deputies tried to stop the vehicle, the driver sped off.

Around milepost 62.5, the vehicle went off the road and crashed into a tree. No officers or bystanders were hurt, but Lampley was taken by ambulance to Mercy Regional Medical Center. Davalos was flown to Mercy by helicopter “due to the severity of her injuries.” The two were reported as being husband and wife.

Their conditions could not be confirmed early Wednesday.
